This paper examines the factors behind the gender differences in academic performance across 77 countries. The study decomposes variation in the gender gap across observable and unobservable attributes. The paper found that enjoyment of reading and expectations about future careers are the main drivers of gender gaps in academic achievement. These factors are more relevant for explaining the reading gap, where girls outperformed boys; in the opposite case, where boys outperformed girls, these factors are also important but not sufficient to explain the endowments underlying the math and science gaps.
