Abstract

This article studies the effects of the adoption of generic cigarette packs in Mexico. Through experimental methods, we find that the introduction of generic packs decreases participants' satisfaction with the packaging and their perceived satisfaction with the cigarette's taste; and increases their perception of health risks. Furthermore, it induces suspicion of illegality and increases the preference for non-generic contraband packs.
