Social ownership of the land and its incidence on local development in Mexico

This article analyzes the impact of social land ownership on the economic growth and development of Mexican states. Drawing on economics and neo-institutional theory, a quantitative approach using linear regression and ordinary least squares is used to analyze the relationship and dependence between the percentage of socially owned land in Mexican states and variables relevant to their economic and social development. The results show a negative and significant relationship between the percentage of socially owned land and the Gross Domestic Product per State (GDP), the Total Paid Personnel (TSP), the exports and the financial autonomy of state governments (FSA). These results warrant a study at the municipal level to understand the specific dynamics of social ownership in Mexico.
